London trophy building restored with UFH

A luxury penthouse in the heart of Westminster, London has recently become available to buy for £35 million. Only yards from the Houses of Parliament, the opulent home offers 10,000 square feet of luxe living space. Dubbed The Astor at 9 Millbank, the neoclassical building was once the HQ of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and was designed by the architect Sir Frank Baines.

ICI was formerly Britain’s largest manufacturer and moved from the building which it called “Imperial House” in the late 90s. In 2014, the building’s owners, the Berkeley Group, were granted planning permission to divide the Grade Listed property into 189 residences.

Executive Director at Berkeley, Paul Vallone commented:

"We worked closely with our heritage consultants, to ensure the design was both sympathetic to the historic building and addressed the various planning conditions."

In a nod towards the well-appointed building’s history, its original heating radiators have been retained. The radiators feature cast iron work that no longer exists and due to their unique nature were deemed irreplaceable. Repurposed mainly as heritage features, the radiators were designed to make an impression, but the real heat comes from a considerable amount of underfloor heating befitting a luxury London penthouse.

If you are seeking a discreet underfloor heating system which is perfect for sympathetically restoring a period property, we can help. With a wealth of experience in the field of UFH, our team at FastWarm can help you source the ideal system. Get in touch with us today for advice and equipment.
