Does UFH raise the height of your floor?

When considering a wet or electric underfloor heating (UFH) system for a room, remember that while the heating equipment will have minimal impact on raising floor height, certain system types can add to floor build-up.

Typically, this can happen through installation techniques like insulation layers and levelling compounds. We’ll take a closer look at these methods below.

Electric UFH thickness

Electric UFH systems are usually slimmer than warm water systems, and have less impact on floor height. Electric heating comes as pre-wired heating mats or loose systems, and most variants of each are just a few millimetres in thickness.

Some electric systems can be installed in a layer of levelling compound or tile adhesive called “thinset”, which is designed not to raise the floor height in the room.

Wet UFH thickness

Water-based systems use flexible pipes and typically need deeper installation. Often, they’re submerged into concrete subfloors to help distribute room heat evenly.

However, low-profile wet systems are also available for dry installation, where no concrete is poured.

Insulation for wet and electric UFH

Both wet and electric UFH requires appropriate insulation to prevent heat loss and contributes to flooring build-up.

Floor height is rarely an installation issue as wet systems are typically fitted in construction projects, and thickness is calculated and accounted for in build plans. Electric systems are ideal for retrofit installations and rooms with a low ceiling, as they have little to no effect on floor height.
